Your Website Might Be Ready for SEO... But Is It Ready for AI?

For years I’ve been working from my home office. I even invested in an adjustable desk and walking pad to increase my productivity. But six months ago, I realized that too much of my time was taken up by distractions around the house (piles of laundry and dishes – I’m looking at you).

I took a tour at a local co-working space and to my surprise, it was just the right amount of hustle and bustle with comfortable furniture and access to conference rooms. The facility I chose also happened to be a business incubator & accelerator, so now I have access to free programs and business resources.

I’m not telling you this to promote that co-working space, but to point out that I’m doing everything I was at home, but now my productivity has skyrocketed just from adding a trip to the office twice a week.

This is the same concept as with AI Optimization. If you’ve been implementing good search engine optimization (SEO) practices with backlinks, content creation, and targeted keywords, you’re already in a great position to show up on AI generated content like ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and Alexa. But there’s a few things you can do in addition to good SEO practices for AI Optimization.

Top 3 Ways to Optimize for AI

  1. Control how your site interacts with AI crawlers with a LLMS.txt file. Your website most likely has sitemap.xml in place. This tells search engine bots what pages you want them to potentially list in search results. A LLMS.txt file is similar, but instead of listing pages for search engines, it lets you control how AI crawlers and large language models (LLMs) interact with your website.
  2. Think about how your clients talk to AI: they ask questions. So you have to do the same to become the chosen answer: Write in Q&A style – headings as questions, answers in 1–2 sentences.
  3. ChatGPT is powered by Microsoft, which means Bing is its main search engine. Ranking on Bing can directly influence whether AI tools recommend you. Create a Bing Places listing, there are fewer therapists are there, so it’s easier to rank.
